New photos & information

Just added a few new photos and I have new photos of the girls to add on their new pages as well! We still have two un-named girls so I’ll take any ideas for them, I’ll post their photos soon as I can!

Today 7/5 we were able to get a lot of needed weeding done, me sitting on the ground and begging the weeds to come to me so I could pull them out rather then moving to them, and Simon moving all over getting rhubarb and strawberries weeded.

We have Celery, Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers, Cayenne Peppers, Peas, French Beans, and other veggies all planted in the propagators. Thanks to a neighbour we have other tomatoes growing now in their own pots so that they settle and we can get them growing nicely.

And sadly, someone stole my four carrot tubs, emptied the dirt out and stole them off the allotment. Who knows why someone would steal them, they had holes in them, fiberglass broken, no knobs or anything…  Thankfully I saw another way to plant my carrots within the garden with luck and no flies getting to them.

We’re hoping that we get a great crop this year to help supplement the eggs and such. Who knows what will happen, but we can always hope and wish it all grows and maybe we’ll have some great food this summer!

Stealing of my allotment supplies!

As you’ve seen and heard I keep my carrots growing in bathtubs, fiberglass ones with holes and minging bottoms. Well some brain decided to steal all FOUR of the tubs I’ve been given! I swear it pisses me off to keep having things stolen from the allotment, I can’t have anything nice there because they steal things so quickly! Last year I had an early and late crop of carrots, but they sole and entire tub of my late carrots over 50 of them!! And a lot were going to my landlord’s children’s cavies, nothing big just helping them as they help us. But to steal an entire lot of carrots??? So plans are limited to what we keep there and now I have to ask my mate again for some tubs for the carrots in hopes that I can get them growing again because we love the carrots and there’s so many to pick from!

Last year they stole our tiller, we had saved up for a cheap one but still the same they stole it! I swear I hate being there at times but know all the hard work we’ve put into it that I wouldn’t move for the life of me! We suffered through glass, brambles, theft, and foxes! But it’s our allotment and something we’ve put hard work into and something we’ll continue to do because we love it so! Even in the dirt to plant things I enjoy things there and can’t wait for the summer to be crawling again. I don’t get far and I may not do much but I love the allotment and we’ll keep going and keep battling to have our things.

What’s been happening lately…

So far the food that’s survived the mice and that I grew at home, we now have some corn, some type of squash, continual spinach, cabbage, flowering purple broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatoes and popping corncobs.

Most of it is growing, sadly the snails and slugs got to a few plants and ate them whole! This being through egg shells and under containers so they all got fed to the princesses for their nasty deed! Luckily most is growing back and I hope now there are more egg shells and slug and snail repellent is down we’ll be in better shape.  Hopefully everything will grow and we’ll be able to feed the hens aka the princesses and ourselves.

We had planted a large four separate patches of potatoes. We dug up a test patch from our first in and nothing was on the plant, sadly we’re afraid that all our first main crop may have nothing on them as they lived through the rain and hot weather so blight may have gotten the field. We have the other plots of potatoes, we won’t dig any test plants up in them as there aren’t many of them so we can always hope there are potatoes on the plants in the main first crop later into the season.

A friendly man and his wife offered us some plants, flowering purple broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and tomatoes. We planted a ton of everything in my flower bed since it was the only free bed since the tiller was stolen. So I lost my gardening area and flowers but hopefully it’ll all grow and thrive with lucky and growing care.

Yes, someone broken into our shed and stole our tiller, sadly that means digging plots by hand and Simon sore and his back highly aggravated.  But our next one will be a 5 stroke and taken with us daily if we get one as we’ll be having the whole lot tilled by a neighbour’s mate, so we’ll till it though out the winter minus the apple trees, but hopefully dig up the strawberries for a few more years out of them. so it’s plow the field, rake, plow, rake, and continue all winter this way until we feel all weeds are dug up.

I’ve replanted more carrots in one of the tubs that just wasn’t growing, no idea what kind but I tossed them in and with hope they’ll be winter carrots. I have a medium box full of carrots and a tub full, but more spare seeds for winter carrots for the third tub that’s about half growing, so they may be winter carrots as well with the ones I plant in soon as I’m feeling better.

Currently I’m down, very poorly and not making it to the allotment, but on the plus side I have a nice tan :)

>Planting up!!

>The seeds are due in soon and I can’t wait for them, so we can get the seeds started in their pots. Newspaper pots are working good for the onions and garlic, so we have big plans for all the seeds and manure we need. We just want to get started on the allotment. Potatoes, flowers, carrots, hen food, tomatoes, broccoli, and herbs!!

Chicken coop

>We got a great pressie from Mum a chicken coop for Yule! So come March time we hope to get a few chickens, and fencing all ready by the time Simon builds the coop and the yard and fox trap for them. The chickens are from long ways away but organic eggs and a patch of food just for them!! Cabbages, carrots, lettuce, and lots of other veg for them daily!

I can’t wait until we have them!!!

>Big Carrots!!

>

These photos are a week after the last photos. The carrots are growing wild and filling up the tub fantastically, the colours are just starting to come in and the carrots are just starting to look like real carrots.
I had to pull some of them to thin out and that’s when I noticed the colouring and shaping. I can’t wait until they’re ready!!

Two different and nice views of our carrots they’re growing like crazy and I have thinned out some carrots so all sizes will be in the tub from small to large! Next year I’ll hopefully have more colours and sizes all over more tubs!

>Carrot Tub

>

These are the carrots that are growing nicely in the tub each clump are a few seeds that have grown. There are two sets and types of carrots growing together so we’ll never know what kind of carrots we’ll pull up, I just can’t wait until they’re big enough to big enough to pull and eat a few in a nice salad or on they’re own. They look wonderful and they’re draining nicely with all the rain we’ve been having luckily they’re growing great!!

>Carrot Tub

>

You can just make out the tips of the carrots that are sprouting out from their personalized tub! There are about 50 sprouts coming up, but that doesn’t mean there are 50 carrots as there are lots of leaves on each carrot.
I’m hoping the mix in there will produce the baby carrots, large carrots and medium sized carrots as well. So the assortment should be great and with the baby carrots means I can pull a few up from the tub and eat the right there and then!
Next year I have more surprizes in store for the carrots as well as more tubs, some really wild things growing in the carrot section! And they will all be carrots just amazing carrots!!

>Recent crops

>First tub holds carrot seeds filled!!
Next tub holds a bunch of fresh herbs from chives to mint chocolate herbs which not only smells delicious but is great in vanilla cake!!
Then we have our first tomato!!! Small but we have now over eight huge tomato plants so something is bound to grow!!
And tonight we had a great small salad from our own lettuce!! I can’t wait until we can pick more in huge amounts.
